Interpreting the Indian-Mughal Architectural element in your living room-"The Jali Work"!

"The Jali Work"
Jali work is a very intricate and exclusive ancient Indian-Mughal Architectural element.'Jalis' are screens made of perforated stone or marble with exquisite floral geometric lattice patterns allowing a cheerful play of light and shade!

The Jali work has been a key architectural element in Islamic Architecture throughout the Arabic region and is traditionally called the 'Mashrabiya'.

The Modern Interpretation of 'Jali work'

They can be used in family room and sun room to enhance the play of light and shade and make the room bright and vibrant yet protect against the harsh sunlight...as top hung screens they allow to define different spaces without reducing the area..These patterns can also be used on door and window screens for aesthetics, and add elegance to the decor in place of the boring window grills!
The traditional Moraccan lamps use these patterns for an exotic play of light and shade...with colourful glass cut outs that make exquisite patterns on the walls and ceilings!!

The Jali pattern not only add elegance but also help in enhancing the space without reducing the area. They can be used on balustrades for stairs, screens as room separators or just beautiful wooden carved folding screens which not only add glamour and charm but also can be easily folded away when not needed!!

  1. Technology has advanced so much that now we have computerized machines that can cut wood into any jaali pattern that we want. Although handmade ones have their own charm, these are more cost effective to the common man.

    1. true! though even I would go for a cheaper alternative and give a modern spin on it using either handmade copper and clay or alt courses of brick with inlays!
